Statement Drift is not a feeling about whether something has changed. It is a measurable deviation from a documented baseline. Where a baseline exists, drift can be tested, scored, and recorded.

What This Means When a system, framework, or pattern of behavior departs from its established baseline, that departure should not be settled by preference, intuition, or debate alone. It should be assessed by comparing current output, behavior, or language against a prior documented state using defined criteria. The measured gap between baseline and current state is the evidence used to assess drift. Subjective impressions of change are not sufficient to establish drift, and subjective impressions of consistency are not sufficient to rule it out. Measurement is the standard.

What This Prevents Drift by denial: the dismissal of documented deviation as a matter of perspective, preference, or interpretation. When drift is treated as opinion, it becomes difficult to defend against and difficult to correct. Treating it as measurable keeps it within the domain of evidence.

Boundary Feeling that something has drifted is not a drift finding. Feeling that something has not drifted is not a drift clearance. Only comparison against a documented baseline using defined criteria produces a defensible drift assessment.
