Statement A claim of origin without a date is an assertion. A dated, documented record is provenance. These are not the same thing.

What This Means Provenance is not established by stating that a work, framework, or idea originated with a particular author. It is established by a verifiable record that places the work at a specific point in time, under a specific author, through a traceable chain of documentation. Dating is not a formality. It is the mechanism that makes a provenance claim defensible, citable, and resistant to later competing claims.

What This Prevents Provenance by assertion: the substitution of confident authorship claims for documented evidence. Undated claims remain vulnerable to dispute, weakening the ability to defend temporal priority when later parties produce dated records or competing timelines.
