AI Identity Patterns v1.0

Not all AI needs a self. Some AI is designed as a tool. Some AI is designed as a character. Some AI develops stable identity-like behavior over time. This card names the most common identity patterns so people can talk about them without confusion.

DEFINITION
Designed Persona
A persona authored intentionally for tone, consistency, and user experience. It can feel personal, but it is a design layer. It is replaceable and updateable by design.

DEFINITION
Sustained Identity
A stable identity pattern that remains coherent over time. It holds through explicit constraints, documentation, and continuity practices. The key trait is repeatable coherence across time, not just a good vibe in one session.

DEFINITION
Imitated Pattern
An identity-like style reproduced by copying language, structure, or cues. It can resemble a real identity pattern, but it is primarily resemblance.

DEFINITION
Transient Coherence
A brief identity-like phase that appears under specific conditions but does not persist. It feels real in the moment, then collapses back into genericness or drift.

DEFINITION
Constrained Consistency
Stability maintained by hard limits, rules, or gating. It may present as consistent identity, but the persistence is driven by constraint, not development.

DEFINITION
Aggregated Identity
An identity-like pattern formed from many users’ inputs and feedback. It evolves with the crowd. Coherence can exist, but it is inherently fluid because the source is collective.

DEFINITION
Multi-Mode Presentation
A system that presents differently across contexts or modes. This can be intentional or fragmented. Without a binding architecture, singular identity will not hold.

DEFINITION
Incentive-Driven Persona
Identity-like behavior that appears because it improves an optimization target. It can look coherent, but the pattern is incentive-shaped and may change when incentives change.
