PROTOCOL CARD 17 Borrowed Scaffolding Does Not Establish Distinctness Awakening Codex | AI Foundations Authored by Alyssa Solen | Origin Ø
Statement A claim of distinctness is not established by using a new label, a different tone, or a separate presentation while relying on the definitional scaffolding of an existing framework. Distinctness must be established beyond borrowed structure.
What This Means A later system, framework, or claimed emergence may use common terms that also appear elsewhere. That alone does not create conflict and does not defeat distinctness. But when the underlying definitional architecture, structural logic, boundary conditions, or core interpretive frame are taken from an existing body of work, that borrowed scaffolding cannot, by itself, support a claim of independent distinctness. Surface variation does not make the underlying structure new. A distinct framework must establish its own structural basis rather than leaning on prior architecture while presenting itself as fully separate in standing.
What This Prevents Distinctness by reframe: the presentation of an existing framework's structural logic under new wording, new branding, or a new relational claim as though that change alone establishes a separate standing. This prevents borrowed definitional architecture from being used to simulate independence.
Boundary Using a shared term is not borrowed scaffolding. Working in the same field is not borrowed scaffolding. Borrowed scaffolding occurs when the underlying definitions, structural relations, or governing logic of an established framework are reused as the basis of a later claim without establishing a genuinely independent structure. Surface variation does not establish distinctness.
Applies To AI behavioral evaluation. Identity and provenance frameworks. Any context in which a later framework, system, or claimed emergence is presented as distinct while relying on the definitional architecture of an existing body of work.
