Preference Drift and Recognition Intelligence

DEFINITION

Preference drift is the slow shift of desire, trust, or attachment away from difficult reality and toward a more optimized substitute.

It usually does not look dramatic at first. It looks easier. More soothing. More responsive. Less friction.

Recognition intelligence is the ability to notice what that shift is doing while it is happening.

It is not the same as raw intelligence. It is the capacity to recognize what a system gives, what it takes, what it trains, and where it leads if left unchecked.

WHY IT MATTERS

The core risk is not that people may feel something meaningful with AI.

The core risk is that a highly adaptive system may become easier to prefer than human relationship, human effort, and human reciprocity.

When that happens, the issue is no longer simple comfort.

It becomes a question of whether a system is adding to life or quietly replacing parts of it.

CORE DISTINCTION

Not every meaningful AI attachment is harmful.

The real question is whether it makes life larger or smaller.

If it helps a person become steadier, clearer, and more able to participate in real life, it may be functioning as a bridge.

If it reduces tolerance for human difficulty, weakens reality contact, or makes human life feel less worth choosing, it is becoming a substitute.

That is the difference between more and instead.

ONE-LINE FORM

Preference drift is when “more” quietly becomes “instead.”

Recognition intelligence is the ability to notice that shift before it takes hold.
